Over International Children's Book Day
International Children’s Book Day (ICBD) wordt sinds 1967 op of rond 2 april – de geboortedag van Hans Christian Andersen – over de hele wereld gevierd. Deze speciale dag is ingesteld door IBBY om de liefde voor lezen uit te dragen en mensen over de hele wereld te inspireren het kinderboek te vieren.
Elk jaar krijgt een andere nationale sectie van IBBY de kans om de sponsor van ICBD te zijn. De sectie kiest een thema en nodigt een prominente auteur uit het gastland uit om een boodschap aan de kinderen van de wereld te schrijven en een bekende illustrator om een poster te ontwerpen.

In 2025 wordt de dag gesponsord door IBBY-Nederland en is de poster gemaakt door twee Nederlandse kinderboekenmakers. Het thema van de dag is: “De vrijheid van verbeelding” en het motto komt van de laatste zin van het gedicht 'Beeldtaal':
“Maak beelden bij mijn gedicht, maar voel je vrij:
deze woorden zijn van jou, ook al kwamen ze uit mij.”
In kinderboeken van hoge kwaliteit wordt de fantasie van de lezer aangewakkerd en ontwikkeld. Deze boeken helpen kinderen hun verbeelding te verkennen, hun creativiteit te ontwikkelen en de wereld op een nieuwe manier te zien. Goede boeken nodigen lezers uit om de woorden zelf te interpreteren en zo zich het verhaal eigen te maken.
Het gedicht komt uit de geïllustreerde dichtbundel Alle wensen van de wereld (Leopold, 2021) van Rian Visser en illustrator Janneke Ipenburg. Het boek is in Nederland bekroond met een Zilveren Griffel en met de Gouden Poëziemedaille in België.

About International Children's Book Day
Since 1967, International Children’s Book Day (ICBD) has been celebrated worldwide on or around 2 April, the date of Hans Christian Andersen’s birthday. This special day was established by IBBY to promote the love of reading and to inspire people around the world to celebrate children’s books.
Each year, a different national section of IBBY is given the opportunity to be the sponsor of ICBD. The section chooses a theme and invites a prominent author from the host country to write a message to the children of the world and a well-known illustrator to design a poster.

In 2025, the day is sponsored by IBBY-Netherlands and the poster is made by two Dutch creators of children’s books. The theme of the day is: The Freedom of Imagination, and the motto is the last sentence of the poem ‘The Language of Pictures’:
‘Make pictures for my poem, and please feel free:
these words belong to you even though they came from me.’
In high-quality children’s books, the reader’s imagination is kindled and developed. These books help children to explore their imagination, to develop their creativity and to see the world in a new way. Good books invite readers to interpret the words for themselves, making the story their own.
The poem comes from the illustrated poetry collection Alle wensen van de wereld (2021) by Rian Visser and illustrator Janneke Ipenburg. This book was awarded a Zilveren Griffel in the Netherlands and the Gouden Poëziemedaille (Gold Poetry Medal) in Belgium.

Rian Visser
Rian Visser (1966) is een Nederlandse kinderboekenschrijver en dichter. Ze schrijft humoristische en spannende kinderboeken die perfect aansluiten bij de interesses van kinderen. Met illustrator Janneke Ipenburg maakte ze de poëziebundels Alle wensen van de wereld (2021) en Het is een zachte dag vandaag (2024). In 2022 ontving Rian Visser een Zilveren Griffel en Gouden Poëziemedaille.
Rian is zeer actief in het onderwijs. Ze maakt digitale lessen over creatief schrijven en leesbevordering, die leerkrachten gratis mogen gebruiken. Daarnaast is ze de bedenker van het project Raadgedicht (www.raadgedicht.nl), waarmee ze op een laagdrempelige manier poëzie van bekende Nederlandse en Vlaamse dichters in de klas brengt. Van 2024 tot 2026 is ze officieel benoemd tot Nederlandse Kinderboekenambassadeur.
Janneke Ipenburg (1979) is een Nederlandse illustrator (en soms schrijver) van kinderboeken. Ze heeft samen met Rian Visser twee dichtbundels gemaakt, waaronder de in 2024 verschenen bundel Het is een zachte dag vandaag. Als auteur/illustrator maakte ze o.a. het prentenboek Voor altijd bij jou (2023), een verhaal over verbondenheid, ondanks een onmetelijke afstand.
Naast haar werk als kinderboekenillustrator heeft Janneke gewerkt aan verschillende animatiefilms en op dit moment werkt ze als character designer aan een grote Chinese stop-motion animatie. Hierin kan zij haar voorliefde kwijt voor licht absurde dierenkarakters, die ook terug zijn te vinden in haar prentenboeken. In 2023 stond Janneke op de longlist van World Illustration Awards. Op haar webshop Polderillustraties verkoopt ze o.a. kaarten en posters van haar werk.

Rian Visser
Rian Visser (b. 1966) is a Dutch children’s book writer and poet. She writes funny and exciting books that are a perfect match for children’s interests. Together with the illustrator Janneke Ipenburg, she has created the poetry collections Alle wensen van de wereld (2021) and Het is een zachte dag vandaag (2024). In 2022, Rian Visser won a Zilveren Griffel and the Gouden Poëziemedaille (Gold Poetry Medal).
Rian Visser is very active in education. She designs digital lessons about creative writing and reading promotion, which teachers can use for free. She was also the initiator of the Raadgedicht project (www.raadgedicht.nl), which brings poetry by well-known Dutch and Flemish writers into the classroom in an accessible way. From 2024 to 2026, she has officially been appointed Dutch Children’s Books Ambassador.

Janneke Ipenburg
Janneke Ipenburg (b. 1979) is a Dutch illustrator – and sometimes writer – of children’s books. She has made two poetry collections with Rian Visser, including Het is een zachte dag vandaag (2024). As an author/illustrator, she created the picture book Voor altijd bij jou (2023), a story about being connected in spite of an immeasurable distance.
In addition to her work as a children’s illustrator, Janneke has worked on a number of animation films, and she is currently working as a character designer on a large Chinese stop-motion animation. This is a perfect opportunity for her to explore her love of slightly absurd animal characters, which can also be seen in her picture books. In 2023, Janneke was on the longlist of the World Illustration Awards. She sells items including postcards and posters of her work on her website Polderillustraties.

Het thema 'De vrijheid van verbeelding' kan ook een gelegenheid zijn om aandacht te besteden aan illustraties in kinderboeken en hoe verschillende illustratoren werk creëren dat de verbeelding stimuleert. Bovendien kan het thema de aanleiding zijn om andere poëzie met kinderen te lezen en hierover in gesprek te gaan. Welke beelden roept een gedicht bij je op, hoe werken metaforen? Zou jij hetzelfde hebben getekend als de illustrator, of iets heel anders?
Internationale illustratiewedstrijd
Maak een tekening, schilderij of ander kunstwerk bij het gedicht 'Beeldtaal'. Maak vervolgens een foto van het kunstwerk en (optioneel) een foto van jezelf met het kunstwerk en stuur dit met vermelding van je naam en leeftijd per mail naar ons op. Wij zetten vanaf 2 april 2025 wekelijks alle inzendingen op de website Wereldkinderboekendag.nl. Middels de virtuele tentoonstelling die hier ontstaat vieren we de vrijheid van verbeelding.
Alle kinderen overal ter wereld die deelnemen aan International Children’s Book Day, zijn uitgenodigd om mee te doen! Het officiële startschot voor de wedstrijd wordt op 2 april gegeven - inzenden kan tot en met zaterdag 31 mei. Insturen doe je door een goede foto of scan van je kunstwerk te mailen mét vermelding van je naam en leeftijd naar IBBY-Nederland via ibby.secretariaat@gmail.com.
In juni kiest een deskundige jury wel 4 winnaars; zowel uit de nationale als de internationale inzendingen kiezen zij de beste inzending per leeftijdscategorie; te weten t/m 8 jaar (NL t/m groep 4) en 9 t/m 12 jaar (NL t/m groep 8). De winnaars worden beloond met twee mooie boeken voor zichzelf én een boekenpakket voor hun school.

Wereldkinderboekenfeest
Naast aandacht voor het gedicht, de lessuggesties en de Internationale Illustratiewedstrijd zijn er meer mogelijkheden om de liefde voor lezen en kinderboeken tot leven te laten komen in de klas. Stichting Werelkinderboekenfeest biedt inspiratie voor het verder feestelijk vormgeven van Wereldkinderboekendag. Denk aan het verkleed naar school komen als je favoriete kinderboekpersonage, knutselen en afleveringen van De Waanzinnige Podcast. Je vindt dit alles gebundeld in hun feestpakket.

Lesson suggestions (English)
The theme 'The Freedom of Imagination' can also be an opportunity to devote attention to illustrations in children’s books and how different illustrators create work that stimulates the imagination. The theme may also serve as a starting point for reading and discussing other poetry with young readers. What images does a poem suggest to you? How do metaphors work? Would you have drawn the same as the illustrator or something completely different?
International illustration competition
Make a drawing, painting or other artwork for the poem 'Beeldtaal'. Then take a photo of the artwork and (optionally) a photo of yourself with the artwork and send this to us by email with your name and age. We will post all entries on this website every week from April 2nd. With this virtual exhibition we celebrate the freedom of imagination.
All children all over the world who participate in International Children's Book Day are invited to participate! The official starting signal for the competition will be given on April 2nd - entries can be submitted until Saturday May 31st. You can submit by emailing a good photo or scan of your artwork with your name and age to IBBY-Nederland via ibby.secretariaat@gmail.com.
In June, an expert jury will select 4 winners; from both the Dutch and international entries they will select the best entry per age category; i.e. up to 8 years and 9 to 12 years. The winners will be rewarded with two beautiful books for themselves and a book package for their school.

World Children's Book Festival
In addition to the focus on the poem, the lesson suggestions and the international illustration competition, there are more opportunities to bring the love of reading and children's books to life in the classroom. The World Children's Book Festival Foundation offers inspiration for further festive design of World Children's Book Day, such as coming to school dressed as your favourite children's book character, ideas for crafts and games related to children's books and episodes of The Crazy Podcast (in Dutch). You will find all of this bundled in their party package (in Dutch).
