Sanne van Heijst
Else: my research into the life of Els Pelgrom
Sanne van Heijst (1980) studied business administration at the University of Groningen. After her studies, she worked as an educational employee at the National Monument Camp Vught. In 2016, her biography Philips-girl (Philips Girl) was published by Atlas Contact, about a young Jewish woman who owed her life to her work for Philips in Camp Vught. As an advisor at Cubiss, Sanne developed various reading promotional products, including Tijdjagers (Time Hunters), about the books of the Writers of the Round Table. In 2019, she read an interview with Els Pelgrom that made her curious about the life story of one of her favorite writers from her youth. This is how the idea for Else (working title) came about, the biography of Els Pelgrom that she is currently working on.

Waar is klimaatverandering?
In deze lezing neemt Suzanne van der Beek ons mee in een onderzoek dat zij samen met Sonali Kulkarni (winnares van de Miep Diekmann Thesisprijs 2022) uitvoerde. Zij hebben onderzocht hoe klimaat-verandering wordt gepresenteerd in een corpus van oorspronkelijk Nederlandstalige en naar het Nederlands vertaalde jeugdboeken. Uitgaande van de observatie dat antropogene klimaatverandering zich wereldwijd op verschillende manieren manifesteert, hebben ze gekeken hoe geografische verschillen worden gerepresenteerd en hoe jonge lezers worden aangemoedigd zichzelf en anderen te positioneren in de globale klimaatcrisis.
Dr. Suzanne van der Beek is Universitair Docent Jeugdliteratuur en Online Cultuur aan het departement Cultuurwetenschappen van Tilburg University.
Helen Limon
There's a book for that - using children's picture books to mediate and so connect with life-stories of vulnerable people
Prompted by a transformative experience with young migrants and Marla Frazee’s silent book The Farmer and the Clown at the IBBY camp on Lampedusa, Helen Limon began using children's books in her research to make a safe and, in her view, more ethically sound space for illuminating the lived experience of military veterans experiencing PTSD. In collaboration with the Seven Stories Centre for Children's Books in Newcastle, this work was expanded to include other groups including a boxing club for young muslim women. At de Haagse Hogeschool, The Arrival by Shaun Tan was introduced to a groups of students participating in a research project on EU mobile citizens. Students were offered the book as a way of “reading” for information, empathy, and compassion.
Dr. Helen Limon is a lecturer in European Studies at the Haagse Hogeschool. Prior to this, she was a research associate at Newcastle University in the Creative Writing Research Department. Her PhD project looked at portrayals of mothering in contemporary children's fiction and her thesis included a novel for children. She is a member of the European Literacy Network and has been associated with IBBY for a number of years. Most recently, she spoke at the Bologna Children's Book Fair on representations of sexuality in children's books.

Alex Schenkels en Mahwish Ashraf
Islamitische kinderboeken als spiegel van het hedendaagse Nederlandse (moslim)gezin
Alex Schenkels is promovendus aan Tilburg University en docent filosofie en sociologie bij de opleiding pedagogiek aan de Fontys Hogeschool in Eindhoven. Hij doet onderzoek naar intensief ouderschap. Er zijn veel verschillende opvattingen over wat goed opvoeden inhoudt. Een zogeheten ‘intensief’ ouderschapsideaal is dominant. Het stelt ‘goed’ ouderschap voor als: kindgericht, arbeidsintensief, expert-geleid en even geluk brengende als uitdagende taak. Studies naar intensief ouderschap dragen bij aan hoe we hedendaags ouderschap begrijpen, maar legt te veel nadruk op families uit de witte middenklasse. Door middel van online en offline etnografie schetst Alex binnen dit project een beeld van een opkomende middenklasse van moslimouders en hun ervaringen en “onderhandelingen” met dit ideaal. Hij kijkt daarbij nadrukkelijk naar de wisselwerking tussen klasse, etniciteit en religie.
Een deelstudie in dit onderzoek ging over Nederlandse islamitische kinderboeken en de manieren waarop hierin moslimidentiteiten en ouderschap worden verbeeld. Hierover gaat de lezing van Alex op de studiemiddag. Hij houdt deze lezing samen met Mahwish Ashraf, de schrijfster van de boekenreeks over Sara en Hamza, die onderdeel waren van het onderzoek van Alex. Mahwish is naast schrijfster, maatschappelijk werkster en blogger.
