Tayo Shima 1937-2017
It is with a heavy heart that I have to share with you the news that our dear friend and colleague Tayo Shima passed away this morning. Tayo had been ill for some time and had recently moved to live in a hospice in Tokyo. She celebrated her 80th birthday in July this year.
Tayo was active in IBBY for many years and served on the Executive Committee from 1990 to 1994, from 1992 as Vice President. She was later re-elected at the IBBY Congress in Groningen, NL in 1996. She served for two years and then was elected by the membership as IBBY President in 1998 at the 26th IBBY Congress in New Delhi. Tayo served as President until 2002.
Tayo was well known for her broad interest in picture books and was the co-director of the Musée Imaginaire, which is a private gallery incorporating a research library of historical picture books. She worked as an editor for the Shikosha publishing house from 1969 to 1981 and was a consultant at the Children’s Literature Center of the Library of Congress in Washington D.C. between 1983 and 1987. Tayo also lectured at the Tokyo University of Fine Art and Music and was a member of the Board of Trustees of the Tokyo Children’s Library.
Tayo was a wonderful and generous friend and we shall miss her.
