Boeken voor de Rusthof Secondary school in de Strand, Kaapstad
I wish to thank IBBY for the generous donation that was used to start a book project at my school Rusthof Secondary in the Strand, Cape Town. The school is situated in one of the poor neighborhoods where most parents are unemployed or depended on governments grants. They can barely afford the school fees and additional reading books are luxury. The learners are exposed to social evils and have a desire to be exposed to a world outside of their dire environment. They approached me for books that they can read after school and also books that they can use for their assignments and projects. i brought books from my home and from friends but the need was much higher.
The 350 euros that I received from IBBY was about 4500 rand that I could use to buy books for young adult readers. It amounted to about 60 titles at different prizes. The learners came to my class after normal school hours and would sit down for an hour to read the books in class. We also devised a loan system whereby they could take the books home and return in due time. They were very excited and enthusiastic. The group that benefitted now was more senior learners about the age 16 years. I want to include younger learners of about 14 years.
Thank you again for your donation. My learners and I highly appreciate it.
Sincerely, Emmerentia van Wyk
